Do you know what the terms Rolls-Royce and Limousine have in common? What about if I added The Silver Ghost to that combination of words? The year was 1915, the car was a Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Silver Ghost…with a limousine body! That’s correct this favorite maker of luxury vehicles was breaking the mold. Silver Ghost enthusiasts more commonly refer to this car as the “Mary Rose.”

Captain H. Whitworth, from Yorkshire custom ordered this car but it ended up being picked up by the New York Rolls-Royce distributer, Schuette and was then sent to Mrs. Alfred DuPont of Delaware.

An interesting fact about the makings of this limo, it was made during a time when all the companies in Britain were focused on providing things necessary for the war, but when King George V. made the request for this vehicle directly and personally, the company hopped right on producing it.

The Silver Ghost was the first and only 1 out of 5 Rolls-Royce vehicles to have coachwork done to it by Hamshaw Ltd. of England. This spectacular limo has had about half a dozen owners throughout its lifetime. The limo boasts luxury from the 1900’s with the wicker trunk, ivory door pulls, C.A.V. lighting, intercom and even an inlaid folding wooden table. This limo had all the bells and whistles for its time.

During an auction in 2007, the Gooding & Company purchased The Silver Ghost limo for a total of $1,100,000.00. When the Silver Ghost limo changed hands again in 2012, it was purchased for $561,000.00. This lovely piece of history has been sought after for years by many British car collectors, those who are lucky enough to own it, even for a brief period of time are willing to pay top dollar for that title.

When we see a limo we immediately think celebrity, someone important or a wedding party. They are a symbol of importance for those who are riding in the limo, especially since you do not see limos driving down the road all the time. Before, limos were just extended cars, but now you can even order an extended SUV limo. Let’s take a look at the 3 longest limos in the world!

The longest limo in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records is 100 feet long, and surprisingly, it is mobile. Due to its staggering 26 wheels, it can roll along just fine!

Incredibly, this limo comes complete with a Jacuzzi, sun deck, and pool. No limo would be complete without its own helipad too, right? They say this limo is big enough to fit an entire football team and still have room to spare. This limo has since been retired and resold to an unnamed bidder.

The next limo on our list will turn heads no matter where it goes. Known as The Midnight Rider, this limo is 70 feet long and weighs 25 tons! This limo can hold 40 people comfortably. The Midnight Rider was built between 1997 and 2004 and is connected to a big rig front end to pull it. It is reminiscent of an RV trailer being pulled by a big rig. It truly is quite a sight.

The third and final limo on our list is a Chevrolet Corvette C6. This limo screams luxury the entire way around. This particular limo measures in at 220 inches long. Convert that 220 inches into feet, and you have just a little over 18 feet worth of luxury right here.

There are so many types of limos out there today, from the extremely long to the extremely weird, I guess you could say there really is something for everyone’s taste.

From the earliest days of humans, luxury has been always around. In the form of transport the luxury meant limousine. What we know of it today is very different from a few centuries back. Limousines were not engine driven beautiful long vehicles, but they were originally horse-drawn carts.

Who would have conjured the thought that limousine could actually be traced back to Horse carriages, that’s the beauty of evolution. And limousines have evolved over the last course of a century drastically — from a horse cart to now luxuriously long vehicles having all the amenities one can imagine of.

The word “limousine” itself has quite a bit of history to it, as it’s derived from origin word “Limoges” tracing its roots in the town of France. The horse cart drivers wore clothing known as Limousine to protect them from rain and wind.

The unique attribute of a limousine which sets it apart from other modes of land based transports is that the driver’s compartment is separate from that of the passengers.

The long stretched designs of limousines were made popular in the 19th century. Originally, stretched automobiles were purposed for transportation of bands and their musical equipment. The trend quickly caught up with the masses and stretched limousines became to be known as “Big Band Buses”.

Hollywood played a vital role in the boom of limousines as they have become now, they were used to carry people of high reputation in Hollywood such as actors, actresses and other noteworthy individuals. Limos were shown in the movies and public awareness grew globally causing a huge surge in the demand of limousines for recreational purposes for common people.

Today the high end limousines are literally complete hotel rooms on wheels, they have all the right pampering one may need in travel. Once a luxury only few could afford, through the years they have now become a service for anyone who wants to experience a little taste of luxury.
